Crowns: How Can They Change Your Smile?

A crown is a porcelain cap that covers a damaged tooth to revive its natural shape, size, appearance and also its strength. It encases the visible part of the tooth and acts like a jacket to protect it from chips, decays, cracks, and fractures. You can get dental crowns for any of the following reasons:

  • Broken, chipped, cracked or fractured teeth.
  • Cosmetic enhancements that improve the look of your smile.
  • Decayed teeth that cannot be restored using fillings.
  • Cover a tooth that has had a root canal treatment done.

How are dental crowns placed?

A dental crown can be placed in two phases.

1) Tooth assessment and preparation

The target tooth is scanned using CAD/CAM technology to prepare a digital image. After assessing the image, the tooth is prepared accordingly. In the case of tooth decay, the cavity is removed. If the decay has reached the root, an RCT is performed. The tooth is filed to prepare it for receiving the crown.

However, not everyone is eligible to get dental crowns. One needs to have a strong tooth structure that can hold the crown in place. A tooth that has lost a large area of its composition is built up using composite fillings. Impressions are made using a digital image and a crown is custom-casted for you. The dentist will keep in mind the color, shape, alignment and your bite before fabricating your crown. Meanwhile, a temporary crown will be placed over your filed tooth to protect it from infections.

2) Installation of the permanent crown

Your doctor will ensure that the newly casted crown matches the color and shape of your natural teeth. If you are happy with the fabrication of the permanent crown, your dentist will bond it to your tooth. A light is used to harden the adhesive and the crown is polished to leave it blazing. You can choose from crowns made from metal, ceramic and porcelain.

Benefits of dental crowns

Dental crowns improve the aesthetic value of your smile by improving its color and structure. The porcelain mimics the natural translucent quality of the teeth and blends in really well.
